Laviani studied Architecture and Design at the Polytechnic faculty in Milan. His professors included Achille Castiglioni, Marco Zanuso and Ettore Sottsass, among others. He therefore also took part in the Memphis movement. From 1983 he worked for Michele De Lucchi and became a partner in 1986, until he went independent in 1991.
That same year he celebrated his first success at the Salone for the label Kartell. He developed the pendant lamp Fly in 2000 for Kartell. His best-known lamp is the Bourgie, and for Foscarini the Orbital. He has also long been responsible for the settings and catalogue of Kartell.
